The draft Request for Proposal (RFP) is now online at:
The draft RFP is a prelude to the actual RFP, to be released at some point early next year. The draft RFP outlines the major points of future the Los Alamos management contract for interested institutions and organizations. UT will now have to find some evidence of "expertise" as a manager of a nuclear weapons laboratory to submit to the Department of Energy. The public comment period ends January 7, 2005, so please contact UT System administrators and ask them not to bid!

Petition Opposing University of Texas' Plans to Manage Los Alamos National Laboratory
To the University of Texas Board of Regents
We, the undersigned, oppose the University of Texas Board of Regents' plan for the University of Texas to manage the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
The primary mission of the Los Alamos National Laboratory is to research and develop nuclear weapons. This mission contradicts the core values of a public university. The University of Texas should not be in the business of developing nuclear weapons. Further nuclear weapons production only encourages other nations to join the nuclear arms race and increases the likelihood of nuclear conflict.
Managing the Laboratory would drain the University's financial and intellectual resources. The University would inherit the facility's systemic problems with academic freedom, worker safety, the environment, lab security, and nuclear waste.
We therefore strongly urge the Board of Regents to immediately stop its initiative to manage the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
